“You describe a character by the shape they leave in the world. The character’s description is not the colour of their eyes as much as the way they turn their heads. It’s not the way they look; it’s their looks, their silences. Paul sees things my way about 75% of the time. Which either suggests mind reading is happening or that my vision of my characters is really rather vague until I see his drawings. He remembers the history of the characters so that a simple illustration will contain little details mentioned in half a dozen earlier books.”
